With the Arabian Sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and
fresh water rivers crisscrossing it, Alappuzha is a district of immense
natural beauty.
Referred to as the Venice of the East by travellers from across the world,
this backwater country is also home to diverse animal and bird life. By
virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique
place in the maritime history of Kerala.
Today, Alappuzha has grown in importance as a backwater tourist centre,
attracting several thousands of foreign tourists each year. Alappuzha is
also famous for its boat races, houseboat holidays, beaches, marine products
and coir industry.

A singular characteristic of this land is the region called Kuttanad. A
land of lush paddy fields, Kuttanad is called the Rice Bowl of Kerala and
is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.
The town was founded by Raja Keshawadasan, Divan of Travanacore in 1762.

How to Reach Alleppey
By Air : Alleppey can be accessible by all the means of communication. Kochi at a distance of 85 km is the nearest airport from Alleppey. The Trivandrum airport is located 159 km south of Alleppey. From both the airports or cities one can easily book with a tour operator or hire a taxi or auto rickshaw to reach Alleppey. Kochi or Cochin and Trivandrum or Thiruvananthapuram, both owns domestic as well as international airport which connects them to the rest of the country and the world.
By Rail : Alleppey is connected to all major cities of the region and India with express trains. Cities like Cochin, Chennai, Howrah, Bangalore and Bokaro are well connected to Alleppey by a rail network.
By Road : As the national highway 47 passes through Alleppey, the place has good road connectivity with rest of the state and elsewhere. Cochin is the nearest big city from Alleppey at a distance of 85 kms. The distance could be covered in 2 hours time. The place is served by both state and private bus services. Frequent bus services will bring you to Alleppey from Kollam in 2 and 1/2 hours. KSRTC operates several buses from various cities of India.
